Lower School: First – Fifth Grade

During “Morning Meeting,” students are taught to look at each other in the eye, greet one another, and cultivate a sense of community.

How children learn is as important as what they learn. Responsive Classroom utilizes teaching practices and strategies for integrating academic and social-emotional learning throughout the school day. It can take the form of a “morning meeting,” which focuses on empowering children to take ownership of their learning, helping them create a safe, challenging, and joyful learning environment inside their classroom through a common language, communal rules, and modeled expectations. Through this philosophy and approach, our teachers help our students understand that to be successful academically and socially, they need to learn a set of social and emotional skills that includes cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.
