Our Children: The Mystery of Not Knowing

Steve Freedman
We do not know if the child in our class, or our own children that we are raising, will someday cure cancer, become the world leader who makes global peace, invent the next great technological tool, become a great artist, or even be the mashiach many believe will come one day. We do not know who our children will become, or what they will do. Their future is a mystery - their potential boundless. We do not know. Can we embrace the mystery of not knowing and enjoy the journey of watching our children grow and become?
Every child is born with a unique blend of talents, dreams, and aspirations waiting to unfold. As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to recognize that we do not possess a crystal ball to see who our children will grow up to become. Instead, it is our primary job to love, support, and nurture their limitless potential. By providing them with opportunities both at home and in school, we can enable our children to explore various paths, discover their passions, and ultimately, shape their own remarkable destinies.

We love our children deeply and as a result, the journey of a child's development which is unpredictable and filled with twists and turns, can be scary for parents who want to provide a clear, predictable and pain free path. We need to remember, no matter our expectations or even our fears, history teaches us of individuals who defied expectations and societal norms to achieve greatness. Think Albert Einstein, Oprah Winfrey, Abraham Lincoln, and countless others.

Our job is to nurture and guide. However, if we impose our desires and expectations onto our children, we run the risk of stifling their unique personalities and individuality. Every child has their own strengths, interests, and aspirations. Forcing them to conform to our predetermined notions could discourage them from exploring their true passions and inhibit their ability to develop a strong sense of self. By imposing our expectations, we may miss their true talents and prevent them from reaching their full potential in areas that they may have great talent in and care deeply about. Attempting to make children conform to our desires and expectations can have serious consequences on their development, well-being, and long-term happiness. It is essential to create an environment that nurtures their individuality, supports their unique aspirations, and allows them the freedom to explore their passions. By embracing their individuality and providing guidance rather than imposing our own desires (and fears), we enable children to thrive and reach their full potential.

At Schechter Bergen, we are partners with our parents to provide the conditions for each child to explore and grow. Education plays a pivotal role in shaping a child's future. At Schechter we provide a well-rounded education that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and exploration where children can discover their innate talents and interests. By fostering a love for learning, we empower them to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue their passions. For instance, a child who enjoys tinkering with gadgets in the Popkin Innovation Lab might blossom into an innovative engineer, while a budding storyteller may become an acclaimed author or filmmaker.

Creating an environment rich in opportunities is essential to unlocking a child's potential. By exposing children to diverse experiences and extracurricular activities, we broaden their horizons and allow them to explore different interests. Participating in sports, arts, music, and community service can develop crucial life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, empathy, and leadership. These experiences serve as catalysts, helping children discover their true passions and strengths, paving the way for a fulfilling future.

While we do our part at school, the love, support, and guidance children receive at home truly form the bedrock of their growth and development. A nurturing home environment provides the emotional stability necessary for children to explore their potential fearlessly. It is through unconditional love and encouragement that they gain the confidence to take risks, learn from failures, and pursue their dreams. By fostering open communication, we can understand their aspirations, interests, and concerns, allowing us to guide them effectively.

In addition, both at home and school, Jewish values, deeply rooted in a rich heritage and ethical teachings, offer a unique framework that can shape the trajectory of a child's life as well. By imbuing our children with Jewish values at home and incorporating them into their education at Schechter, we enable them to develop character, empathy, and a strong sense of social responsibility, guiding them toward a purposeful and meaningful future. Jewish values provide a profound framework for nurturing and guiding our children's development. By integrating these values into their lives, we equip them with a strong moral compass, a sense of social responsibility, and a deep appreciation for their heritage. As they embark on their unique journeys, children influenced by Jewish values can become compassionate leaders, change-makers, and contributors to a better world.

As parents and educators, I believe we must acknowledge that we do not hold a predetermined script for our children's futures. Instead, we must embrace the unknown and create an environment that nourishes their growth, enabling them to become the best version of themselves. By providing love, support, and guidance both at home and in school, we equip our children with the tools to explore their passions, pursue their dreams, and carve their own unique paths. Let us celebrate their individuality and foster an environment where they can thrive, for it is through this unwavering commitment that we can empower our children to become the extraordinary individuals they are destined to be.

As the beautiful and miraculous mystery of who our children will become continues to unfold before our eyes, we can say that much growth has taken place this year and we can all be excited to see what is yet to come for our beloved children!  To our eighth graders, we wish them much success. They will be missed.  To everyone else, we at Schechter Bergen are excited to continue this wonderful journey together as your amazing children continue to grow and discover themselves at Schechter.

This will be the last blog of this school year. When the blog returns in September, we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Schechter Bergen. I look forward to sharing this special year with you and the entire, larger Schechter Kehillah - students, parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, and community supporters!
