Some 20 distinguished scientists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians, and science educators served as judges for this year’s Middle School Super Science Fair. As part of our International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, students presented their research and innovations, applying the key IB concept of effective communication. Projects ranged from earth and environmental science and engineering to psychology and consumer science. Students built everything from prototypes of low-cost air-conditioning units to magnetized shark shields and home-made projectors; they studied the effect of acid rain on aquatic life, and measured the amount of lead in lipstick. They tested muscle memory in football and basketball, and experimented with creating a healthier soft drink. They observed, gathered data, analyzed patterns, reflected on their successes and failures, and then communicated their results.
