A silversmith was a very important member of any colonial town. He needed the talent of an artist to make his pieces. A silversmith would make things from silver that would be used for ornaments or for everyday use, like spoons, plates and cups. Since there was no safe place for the people to store money, silverware was a good investment. People had the silversmith make their silver coins into teapots, trays and tableware. The silversmith melted the coins and hammered them into beautiful silver pieces. Each article could then be engraved so that it could easily be identified if it was stolen.
