Printers made the newspaper for the colonies. There were very few newspapers in early colonial days. The papers printed news about what ships were sailing and what cargo the ships carried. The printers also printed poems, sermons, and advertisements in their papers. Colonists would also come to the printers and ask them to print important documents for them. Most printers had an apprentice and an assistant. To make the newspaper there was a printing press which was kind of like a large stamp. All the letters had to be placed in the press backwards so the page would be correct when it was printed. This took a lot of time to do and papers were printed one page at a time. |
